Bull Red Fishing

Published September 29th, 2023 by Habana Bay Charters

Bull redfish can be caught in the Jacksonville area of Florida, particularly in the St. Johns River and nearby waters.

Here are some tips and information for bull redfishing in Jacksonville:

  1. Best time to fish: Bull redfish are most commonly found in the Jacksonville area from late summer through early winter. September, October, and November are prime months for targeting these fish.
  2. Locations: The St. Johns River is a popular spot for bull redfish fishing in Jacksonville. Look for areas with deep channels, docks, bridges, and grass flats near the river mouth. Jetties, such as Mayport Jetty, can also be productive.
  3. Tides: Pay attention to the tides when planning your fishing trip. Bull redfish are often caught during outgoing tides when they move out of the river and into the nearby inlet and ocean. Rising tides can also be productive, especially around structure.
  4. Bait and lures: Live bait is highly effective for bull redfish. Use large shrimp, mullet, or menhaden on a fish-finder rig or Carolina rig. Cut bait, such as mullet or ladyfish, can also work well. If using lures, opt for large soft plastics in dark colors or topwater plugs that imitate injured baitfish.
  5. Equipment: Use medium to heavy spinning or baitcasting gear with a strong 20-40 lb test line. Bull redfish can reach sizes over 40 inches and weigh 30+ pounds, so make sure your equipment can handle their power. We provide some of the highest quality gear to ensure the best chances of landing one of these trophy fish.
  6. Regulations: Check the current fishing regulations for size and bag limits, as well as any seasonal closures or restrictions in the area.
  7. Technique: When fishing for bull redfish, cast your bait or lure near structure, such as bridge pilings, docks, or submerged rocks. Allow the bait to sink or work your lure close to the bottom. Bull redfish are often found in deeper water, so adjust your presentation accordingly.
Remember to handle bull redfish with care and practice catch-and-release whenever possible to help conserve this popular species. At Habana Bay Charters we will teach you everything you need to know to find, catch and safely release some of the hardest fighting game fish that swim
